Root Canal Treatment
A root canal treatment is done when the nerve inside the tooth, also known as the pulp, is infected or inflamed. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth or a crack or chip in the tooth. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

★ Pain in tooth that is severe, persistent and throbbing.
★ Tooth is sensitive to hot and cold temperatures that linger for sometime
★ Pain due to the pressure of chewing or biting
★ Patient might have increased body temperature i.e. fever
★ Swelling on face or cheek
★ Tenderness or swelling of the gums surrounding the tooth
★ Darkening of the tooth

The procedure of Root Canal Treatment involves:
1. Administration of Local Anaesthesia to numb the tooth so that patient does not feel any pain while the procedure is going on
2. A cavity is prepared in tooth and removal of inflamed or infected tooth material is done using high speed machine
3. At this stage cleaning and disinfection of the canal space is done
4. The final step involves filling and sealing the root space with an inert material which does not allow further infection
5. To protect the tooth from further damage a permanent restoration and crown/cap is placed
As it is a multi-step procedure and may require number of sittings which differs from case to case.
